The Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor

BE GREAT.

There are over 1,500 active members at the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor. And by September of 2012, the Club will have opened two brand new youth development facilities located in the heart of Benton Harbor with the goal of doubling their impact by 2015! Research has shown that youth participation in education-based extracurricular activities equals the greatest predictor of adult success. The Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor utilizes this outcome-based approach as the core strategy for each program.

Proceeds from the 8th Annual Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor Golf Tournament and Steak & Burger Dinner were used to expand each of the core programs listed below:

Character & Leadership Development: This program area encourages empowerment of youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and others’ cultural identities. Members actively participate in Keystone and Torch Clubs by participating in community and Club service projects.

Health & Life Skills: This area assists in developing young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. Members participate in activities that apply to their everyday life and take part in alcohol, tobacco and drug awareness prevention programs.

Education & Career Development: This area enables youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success in a career. The summer literacy program serves over 400 Club members and has improved reading levels on average by almost one grade level (per participant) each of the last two years.

Sports, Fitness and Recreation: This area develops fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills. Members have access to a wide variety of organized activities including basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, flag football and others.

The Arts: This area enables youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing. Many drama and art participants have attended plays and community events due to your support.

Specialized Program Initiatives: These programs focus on meeting significant, specific needs that have been identified within the Boys & Girls Club Movement. Raising graduation rates and college/career readiness in Benton Harbor is the top priority, but not without a supplemental commitment to positively impacting critical issues like juvenile crime, youth obesity, mental health and teen pregnancy rates.
